Threshold Concepts (and troublesome knowledge)

I have been interested in Threshold Concepts, and how they might help me support students to understand Chemistry, for a while now. I’ve read and blogged about them, used research literature to inform my teaching, and analysed student answers to try and identify them. Threshold Concepts fascinate me, because they conjure up those satisfying “lightbulb moments”, when a whole host of ideas that you’d been struggling to understand suddenly fall into place.

“What does this look like in the classroom?” by Carl Hendrick and Robin MacPherson (a book review)

I’ve had the book for a week now, and have read it twice already. This is one of the book’s key strengths – it is incredibly accessible and provides insights for teachers no matter their ‘research literacy.’ For those brand new to research the book introduces some key issues that all teachers should be aware of, such as the impact of cognitive science on how children learn, and how to use research on assessment and marking to lower work load. For those more familiar with some key areas of research, the book expands on these areas further as well as introducing some new areas to be aware of. Personally I feel relatively research literate and yet still found the book incredibly insightful. […]

5 “do now” ideas: formative assessment

Last year, teachers in our school met regularly in small groups to find ways of using research to inform their practice. Every member of staff selected an area to reflect on, applied promising ideas within the classroom, and considered their impact.

A voluntary team of teachers sourced research-informed “techniques” and “reading lists”. These were the initial links given to our Assessment and planning group. […]
