My year as Research Lead

17 July 2018

At the end of this academic year I leave for pastures new. However, I didn’t want to go without summarising my key findings of my short stint as research lead. It has been a real eye-opener, both in terms of the research itself but also with regards to how it is received in schools.

So here’s my top 3 takeaways:  […]

Will they remember this next year? 5 key points for long-term learning

28 February 2018

We encounter a huge amount of information all the time via our senses. If we paid attention to it all, we would very soon be overloaded and unable to deal withany of it. For this reason, much of what we encounter is very quickly forgotten, unless we pay attention to it, and make a point of remembering it. […]

Journal Club- reflections on our first term

6 January 2018

I gave Journal Club a bit of a revamp when I started as Research Lead back in September. One of my key aims as Research Lead has been to appeal to the masses of our teaching staff, to cater for the busy teacher who believes they don’t have time for research in amongst everything else they have to do. Norwich Research Leads Network #NorRel

16:00–18:00 on 5 February 2018

The Research Leads Network is an informal peer support network to share ideas and practice among like-minded educators who are interested in using research to inform their teaching, and teaching in their schools. On a practical level, this is what we do:
1. Monthly meetings, open to anyone interested in that month’s topic and/or speaker. You don’t have to be a member of the Network to attend (so you can bring a colleague if you like)
2. Research Lead training with Stuart Kime from Evidence Based Education (21 March). We would particularly recommend this for Research Leads working on Evidence-Based Practice Fund projects, as evaluation is Stuart’s area of expertise and so important to funded projects
3. Networking, both formal and informal, and direct contact with experts in their fields who are working with Norwich Research School to share best practice and translate it into the classroom. […]

Dual Coding- what, why and how.

16 October 2017

Many may consider it to be a new term to describe an old technique, but dual coding is the combination of visuals and words in the classroom to aid learning. It has garnered attention since the Learning Scientists named it one of their six strategies for effective learning. It is argued that a combination of auditory and visual aids increases both retention and recall amongst students. […]

ResearchEd 2017 – A First Timer’s Account

19 September 2017

For someone interested in research and the impact it has on education, ResearchEd is one of the most cost-friendly “CPD” activities you can undertake. Where else will you get to talk OFSTED expectations, Threshold Concepts and Behaviour Management with experts all on the same day in the same location? I found it all both thought-provoking and eye opening. I left with different opinions on growth mindset, ideas on how to speed up the delivery of curriculum content, and with new insight into the problems and challenges presented by assessments following life after levels. I have talked the ear off anyone who has dared to ask “How was ResearchEd?” […]
