Secondary Science 2- Making it easier to do the interesting stuff…

8 October 2018

The introduction to Recommendation 4 begins “You cannot do science without knowledge. Pupils have to learn new concepts and vocabulary and apply this learning in new contexts. So being able to remember information is important for success in school science.”

So in the same way that learning the words to a choral work off-by-heart didn’t prevent me from singing it musically, taking memory and cognitive load into account when teaching Science doesn’t mean producing robotic students, who can recite lots of “facts” at me without truly understanding them […]

Metacognition – what, why (…and how)

16 December 2017

it’s the kind of thing that we probably do (and have done) for a long time, which is why we’ve all been successful in things like exams. When we study, we think about why we did what we did; we consider what went wrong when we’re not pleased with an outcome; we reflect on experiences, and decide which strategies were helpful (and which were unhelpful). We decide for ourselves what we’ll do again next time, what we’ll do better next time, and what we’ll abandon. […]

Stuart Kime spoke at our Information Evening last week about the sense of excitment that’s building in “the East” about how we can work together and use Research to improve practice and outcomes here. He also spoke about Bananrama… but that’s another story.
November has been another busy, positive and encouraging month. You can read our newsletter (and subscribe to it here) but this post outlines some personal reflections on the past month. […]

October round-up: Spirit of collaboration

10 November 2017

One of the most exciting aspects of becoming a Research School, and being part of the Research Schools Network, is the opportunity it brings to work closely with others and collaborate. Our ultimate aim is to help improve outcomes for young people in Norwich (and Norfolk), but we can’t do this on our own! However, we have an great chance to work alongside others to help and support people around us. […]
